"One is not born into the world to do everything but to do something…"Henry David Thoreau
Being aware of the issues that affect our lake helps allow us to act responsibly in order to protect Damariscotta Lake. Every one of us can do something to help sustain and protect our valuable resource. Remember that your personal actions do make a difference. The choices you make everyday around your home affect our lake. The following is a list of things you can do to help improve and protect Damariscotta Lake. You may not be able to adopt them all, but with each step you do take, you are helping to sustain our precious lake. GARDENING AND LAWN CARE
- Keep fertilizer use to a minimum-only use if a soil test indicates the need
- Use fertilizer as directed
- Use a non-phosphorus fertilizer when you decide fertilizing is necessary
- Use native grasses and shrubs to reduce the need for extra watering
- learn more at http://www.umext.maine.edu/onlinepubs/htmpubs/2502.htm
- Leave natural undisturbed buffer strips to protect lake shore
- Click here to learn more about the importance of buffers
HOME

- Dispose of toxic materials responsibly-not on the ground or down drains
- Recycle motor oil at a service station that collects it
- Use environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional cleaners
WATER

- Place 2 ˝ gallon plastic bottles filled with sand, gravel, or water and sealed into toilet to cut down on water used with each flush
- Install low flow shower heads and faucet aerators
- Turn water off while brushing teeth, shaving beard, washing and rinsing dishes
- Keep a container of water in the fridge so you don't have to let the water run until it is cold.
SEPTIC
- Don't put chemicals into septic system
- Use the wastebasket for trash, rather than the toilet
- Pump septic system every 3-5 years
- Avoid using commercial product that claims to clean system without pumping
ROADS
- Use culverts, drainage diversions and roadside buffers to deal with road water
- Avoid steep sloped roads (>20%)
- Have buffer strips along roadways
- Contour road so as to prevent water from accumulating on road
RECREATION
- Use engines with good fuel burning capacity
- Use correct gas/oil mixture
- Keep engines properly tuned
- Stay away from loons or other wildlife in their nests
- Choose human or wind powered vehicles whenever possible
- Check boat for invasive species before moving it to another site
