Each year, sixth grade students in Jefferson, Nobleboro, Washington and Somerville participate in DLWA's Wonders of Water program. Through this program, students learn about lake ecology, water quality, recycling, stewardship, plants, animals, erosion and more. This successful program is run by dedicated volunteers who believe that the future of conservation relies on the attitudes and knowledge of children.
During the winter, students choose and implement self-directed projects focused on encouraging their schoolmates and communities to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Students also participate in a fall nature walk and spring melt walk, during which they look for evidence of erosion and human control of erosion.
At Water Wonder Day, students play games, go on a boat ride, make T-shirts, learn about macroinvertebrates and participate in a mock town meeting.
