"The Watershed"

The wildlife enthusiast will find diverse and interesting wildlife due to the wide diversity of habitats located in the watershed. Waterfowl frequenting both salt and fresh waters are found along with, abundant fish, including the fascinating migration in May, of alewives up the fish ladder at Damariscotta Mills. The Common Loon, Osprey and Bald Eagle all nest along Damariscotta Lake. Fox, deer, coyotes, bear, moose, snowshoe hare, wild turkey and numerous other species of interest are frequently seen by the careful observer.

loons

Loons are regular residents of Damariscotta Lake from ice-out to late fall

osprey

Although Osprey are seen feeding at the lake, the most exciting observation is during the alewives migration at the fish ladders in Damariscotta Mills in May.

bald eagles

Bald Eagles nest on Damariscotta Lake and are magnificent additions to our wildlife scene.

mammals

These warm, fuzzy, not always so cute mammals abound in the watershed. There are about forty-eight species that may be found here.

reptiles and amphibians

If you venture out on a spring or summer evening, especially if it's warm and rainy, you will hear the chorus of some of the resident amphibians. Others are quiet as are the reptiles, but both are fascinating.

aquatic birds
Birders will find many feathered songsters in the forested habitats, and in the fields. Aquatic birds are found on fresh water as well as on salt water environments.
